When researching into texture and its definition I came across two terms of texture used in Visual Arts. The first being Actual texture which is texture that you can physically feel, such as the bumps and curves on a sculpture. The second being Visual texture which is the aesthetic representation of real texture without the ability to actually feel the physical properties of the image that you are viewing, such as a photograph of sand paper. The image that I have posted up is called the "Canticle" by Mark Tobey and is an example of Visual Texture. When viewing the image, it seems to be aesthetically representing a rusty and rough like texture due to the placement of several white dots that appear to be "eating" away or fading the paint that is present. Mark Tobey was an American abstract painter  whose works had an important impact on Abstract Expressionism. The link below will show more of his paintings that demonstrated Visual Texture:
